KOLKATA, April 19 -- Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren on Saturday accused the BJP of polarising people on the basis of religion and accused it of shedding crocodile tears for rights of women while "atrocities against women were on the rise". Speaking at a rally at Kashipur in Purulia in support of the Trinamool Congress candidate, Soren said the Narendra Modi government was shedding crocodile tears for women's reservation while it did nothing to prevent atrocities against women in BJP-ruled states. "BJP is trying to divide society, sowing seeds of division among Hindu, Muslims, putting tribals against one another, committing atrocities against dalits and women," he said. "People can now see the poisonous politics of the BJP, its nefarious bid to divide the country to stay in power. The double-engine governments in different states record the largest number of atrocities against women," he said. Soren said the BJP was unfairly blaming parties like Congress and TMC for the defeat of the Constitution Amendment Bill to implement 33 per cent reservation for women in legislatures in 2029 and increase the number of Lok Sabha seats to 816 in the lower house of Parliament on Friday.
