16 Kolkata hotels shut, 50 given show cause for safety norm failure
Kolkata, Aug. 23 -- The West Bengal government has shutdown 16 hotels in central Kolkata while around another 50 hotels across the city were given show cause notices for allegedly failing to meet fire safety norms, officials said.
Officials also said that at least 25 hotels in various districts have been served show cause notices even as teams comprising police and fire brigade officials were going from hotel to hotel to check their documents.
"At least 16 hotels in central Kolkata have been shut down for violating fire safety norms. More than 50 hotels across Kolkata been served show-cause notices since Thursday," said a senior officer of the state fire department.
The hotels were located on Mirza Ghalib Street, Marquis Street and SN Banerjee Road in central Kolkata.
This comes three days after an early morning blaze in a central Kolkata hotel killed nine people on Wednesday. Police have arrested the lease holder of the hotel, while the owner is absconding. At least 80 were rescued.
"Inspection is going on. This will continue. It is not that after closing down 100 hotels we will stop. We will not allow such tinderboxes to operate...How did they get a trade license and fire license? If they don't follow rules, they will be shut down," Agnimitra Paul, state urban development minister, told the media....
