Woman suffers spine injuries in tree collapse
Thane, July 8 -- A 25-year-old woman sustained severe spinal injuries after a tree collapsed on her while she was returning home from work in Thane on Tuesday evening. The victim, Drushti Kadam, a resident of Shivaji Nagar in Wagle Estate, works in the accounts department of a private firm in Savarkar Nagar, Thane.
She lost complete sensation below her waist as a result of the accident and underwent a spinal surgery on Tuesday night. She was initially taken to a nearby hospital before being shifted to Jupiter Hospital due to the severity of her injuries.
According to the Thane Municipal Corporation's (TMC) Regional Disaster Management Cell (RDMC), the incident occurred at around 6.30 pm near Yashodhan Hospital. Kadam was walking home when the tree suddenly collapsed on her. A parked car was also damaged in the incident.
Teams from the RDMC, the Tree Authority, the Thane Disaster Response Force (TDRF), and the civic medical department rushed to the spot, removed the fallen tree, and rescued the woman.
Hanumant Jagdale, Leader of the Opposition in the TMC, who helped shift Kadam to Jupiter Hospital, said, "The victim has been admitted to the hospital, and a spine surgeon has been called in for further treatment. I spoke to TMC Commissioner Saurabh Rao, who assured me that the cost of her treatment will be borne by the TMC."
Hitendra Lolitkar, a social worker who was with Kadam's family at the hospital, told HT, "The doctors have taken her for CT scans and an MRI of her head and spine. They have said that her condition is critical."
The incident is the third serious tree-fall case reported within the TMC limits in recent days.
A 52-year-old man was seriously injured in a similar incident last week, while a 64-year-old man suffered a brain haemorrhage after a tree fell on him on Monday. He continues to remain in critical condition.
The earlier victim, who spent three days in the intensive care unit (ICU), has since been discharged but has been advised complete bed rest....
