India, Oct. 10 -- Mumbai: The city experienced a heatwave on Friday in line with the India Meteorological Department's (IMD) warning the previous day, with daytime temperatures in the suburbs being higher than in south Mumbai. As per the IMD, the maximum temperature recorded at the Santacruz weather station, which is representative of the city, was 37.8 degrees Celsius, 4.7 degrees above normal. It was also the second highest daytime temperature in October over the past 10 years; in 2018, the maximum temperature had touched 38 degrees Celsius. At the Colaba observatory, the maximum temperature was 37 degrees Celsius, 4.4 degrees above normal. Sushma Nair, senior scientist, Regional Meteorological Centre, IMD Mumbai, attributed the spike in temperature, including the heatwave, to two synoptic features related with monsoon withdrawal. "An anticyclone near Mumbai contributed to the high temperature. In addition, wind patterns have changed from westerlies to easterlies, blocking the setting of sea breeze and delaying its onset over the city," said Nair. The IMD has forecast hot and humid conditions on Saturday, with maximum temperatures ranging 35-36 degrees Celsius....
