Mumbai needs a bigger stadium to host big final, says CM Fadnavis
Mumbai, April 10 -- At the naming ceremony for the Ravi Shastri stand at Wankhede Stadium on Thursday, Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis made a pitch for the proposed 1,00,000-seater new stadium in Navi Mumbai to host big finals.
"Everyone feels that Mumbai should host the big final, that's why Mumbai needs a bigger stadium," Fadnavis said.
Mumbai last hosted a World Cup final in 2011. After that, Wankhede Stadium has only hosted semi-finals in home World Cups: the T20 World Cup in 2016, ODI World Cup in 2023 and T20 World Cup in 2026.
"All of us are working towards it. We have overseen a plot of land in Navi Mumbai recently along with Ajinkya Naik (Mumbai Cricket Association president). We have almost finalized a piece of land that's very well connected," Fadnavis said. "I am sure we will come up with the best stadium in the country. We will only allot the land, they (MCA) will construct but we will do our best."
Fadnavis was quick to add that the storied Wankhede Stadium would continue to host matches.
"It doesn't matter how many new stadiums we create. Still, Wankhede is Wankhede. It will forever remain the iconic cricket stadium in Mumbai and we'll always celebrate cricket at Wankhede," he said....
