MPSC secretary transferred amid protests
Mumbai, Oct. 3 -- The Maharashtra government on Thursday transferred Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) secretary Mahendra Harpalkar, days after chief minister Devendra Fadnavis assured protesting MPSC aspirants that the official would be removed from the post.
The General Administration Department (GAD) issued an order ending Harpalkar's two-year deputation as MPSC secretary.
The transfer follows a meeting between Fadnavis and a delegation of MPSC aspirants on September 30, amid growing concerns over alleged paper leaks and other irregularities in the commission's examinations. The aspirants had also demanded the resignation of MPSC chairperson V L Bhimanwar and other members of the commission.
Following the meeting, the aspirants postponed their agitation scheduled to begin on October 2. "Fadnavis assured the transfer and took the decision the very next day. The order was issued accordingly," an official said.
Fadnavis had also assured the delegation of a judicial inquiry into the conduct of the existing and former MPSC chairpersons and members. The inquiry report is expected within three months.
The state government has already ordered a Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe into alleged malpractices in MPSC examinations.
A separate committee headed by senior IAS officer V Radha is also being constituted to recommend comprehensive reforms to the examination system, including guidelines for interviews....
