Masterminds fled, locals harassed in Malda: Didi
Kolkata, April 5 -- Trinamool Congress chief (TMC) Mamata Banerjee on Saturday alleged that while the actual masterminds behind the gherao of judicial officers in Malda district's Mothabari had fled, local youths were being harassed in the name of a probe by the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
Meanwhile, the chief minister ordered a probe after a drone was spotted in the sky before her chopper could take off following a rally at Malatipur in Malda. Police later said three persons were being questioned.
"Two communal parties came and gheraoed the judicial officers. They then fled. Meanwhile, the local youths are being harassed. In the name of the NIA probe, they are arresting 40-50 youths. We can't even protest. No one can submit deputation to the election commission. They have choked all voices," Banerjee said while addressing a rally at Manikchak in Malda on Saturday.
Seven judicial officers were held hostage inside the local BDO office in the Mothabari area of Malda district, and an eighth was confined inside a vehicle for about nine hours on Wednesday after a large crowd, protesting post-SIR deletion of names from voters' lists, turned violent by blocking roads, vandalising vehicles and attacking police personnel.
So far, 35 people have been arrested by the state CID in connection with the violence. The EC has now tasked the NIA with probing the incident following a directive from the Supreme Court, which has censured the West Bengal administration over the issue.
The BJP hit back, saying Banerjee was making baseless allegations as she knew the TMC would not return to power.
"She knows she will lose and hence is trying to come up with such narratives. She is trying to play the victim card and divert attention," said Rahul Sinha, BJP leader....
