I'm sure Iyer will have a good time as India captain: Rohit
Mumbai, June 7 -- It was a somewhat poignant moment when Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav and Shreyas Iyer assembled together at the Wankhede Stadium on Saturday, on the sidelines of the T20 Mumbai League.
These were two former India T20 captains - both World Cup-winning leaders - and the future captain of the Indian team for the shortest format, announced hours before by the selectors.
And Rohit, who led India to the T20 World Cup triumph in 2024 before Surya ensured the trophy remained home earlier this year, expected good things from Iyer as India captain.
"I'm sure looking at how he has captained in the last few years for his franchise, he's going to have a good time," Rohit, the brand ambassador of the T20 Mumbai League, said of Iyer on Saturday.
The Mumbai batter captained Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL title in 2024 and then Punjab Kings to the final in 2025.
Rohit added that captaincy, no matter if it is for Mumbai or India, has to be earned.
"Look, playing in Mumbai, representing Mumbai teaches you a lot of things. If you ask anyone who has captained India or Mumbai before us, they'll tell you the same thing. Nothing comes easy here... You have to really earn it. So captaincy is also something that you have to earn and earn the respect of people around you and that is something that all these guys have," he said.
Surya, who walked out as captain of the Triumph Knights Mumbai North East in their contest against Iyer's Sobo Mumbai Falcons on Saturday, said he was happy for Iyer.
"Very, very happy for Shreyas as he's getting to lead the Indian T20 team. We played a lot of cricket together in Bombay. Most important thing is that there are back-to-back Mumbai captains going on to lead T20Is for India. It's a proud moment, and everyone needs to celebrate that," Surya said at the toss.
Iyer's 36-ball 61 powered the Falcons to a five-wicket win, despite Surya's 24-ball 48.
Rohit also praised Surya, who made quite an impact in India's T20 setup, first as a batter and then as captain after taking over from Rohit.
"I'm pretty sure nothing has come easy, especially for Surya," Rohit said. "He made his India debut at 30 or 31, if I'm not wrong, which means that he never gave up. He always wanted to be in the fight and when it came, he wanted to grab it with both hands, and he did it."...
