Hockey world cups: India, Pakistan men in same group
New Delhi, March 18 -- India are grouped with arch-rivals Pakistan, England and Wales in Group D for the men's tournament in the hockey World Cup, to be held in Belgium and Netherlands from August 15-30. The Indian men qualified for the World Cup after winning the Asia Cup last year. The women's team secured the spot last week after reaching the final of the qualifying tournament played in Hyderabad.
The Indian women are also in Group D, with China, England and South Africa. The draw was held at Amsterdam's Wagener Stadium on Tuesday.
The draw was done by hockey legends Naomie van As, two-time Olympic gold medallist with the Dutch women's team, Belgium woman player Barbara Nelen and Teun de Nooijer, a winner of two Olympic gold medals and a World Cup title during the domination of the Dutch men in the 1990s and early 2000s.
FIH president Tayyab Ikram said: "In today's fractured world, sport-and events such as this in particular-can play a substantial role in bringing people together. It can foster peace at times when our world is torn apart by conflict."
