Eight killed in 2 SUV mishaps in UP as drivers dozed off
Varanasi, April 26 -- Eight people were killed on Saturday morning in two separate road accidents in Eastern Uttar Pradesh - in Mau and Sonbhadra districts - police said, adding that both incidents occurred when drivers reportedly dozed off on the wheel, causing their respective vehicles to lose control and crash.
According to the police, in the first incident, five people died when an SUV collided with a trailer after crashing into a divider near Kusumha Basharatpur on the Gorakhpur-Varanasi four-lane highway in Mau district. The victims were returning to Gorakhpur from Ranchi after attending a wedding, said Ghosi circle officer Jitendra Singh.
In the Sonbhadra accident, eight people, all residents of Garh Shasanai, were onboard the SUV, and were returning home after attending a wedding in the district. Three people were killed and four were seriously injured when their SUV overturned near a vehicle agency in the Lodhi locality under the Robertsganj police station area.
UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath expressed grief over the loss of life. Taking to X, the CM said "The loss of life in the road accident in the Mau district is deeply tragic. My heartfelt condolences go out to the bereaved families. I pray to Lord Shri Ram to grant eternal rest to the departed souls."...
