Australia cruise past south africa in their 1st game
New Delhi, June 14 -- Australia coasted to a 65-run win over South Africa in their opening match of the Women's T20 World Cup at the Old Trafford Cricket Stadium in Manchester on Saturday. Batting first Australia posted 172/8 in 20 overs, riding on a 24-ball 50 by Phoebe Litchfield and a 26-ball 36 by Ellyse Perry.
The innings got off to a rocky start as opener Georgia Voll was out on a duck, while Beth Mooney was dismissed for seven off nine balls. Litchfield was dismissed next, followed quickly by Ashleigh Gardner, who scored just one, as Australia struggled at 62/4.
Perry and Georgia Wareham (32 off 22 balls) steadied the ship, and Annabel Sutherland later chipped in with a brisk 21 from 14.
In reply, the South African batting did not really gather momentum and folded for 107 in 16.4 overs. Captain Lura Wolvaardt provided some resistance, scoring 44 from 39. Wareham was the top wicket-taker with 3/13 in her 2.4 overs.
Scotland made history earlier on Saturday, securing their first-ever victory in the ICC Women's T20 World Cup with a commanding 40-run win over Ireland at Old Trafford.
Led by captain Kathryn Bryce, Scotland posted a competitive 161 in their 20 overs. In reply, Ireland struggled to build momentum, losing wickets at regular intervals and eventually being bowled out for 121 in 19.1 overs....
