Kolkata, July 9 -- An accused in the rape and murder of a 11-year-old girl in West Bengal's Baruipur area was shot dead by the police in an alleged encounter when the police had taken him to the crime scene on early Wednesday morning. Police claimed that he snatched a firearm from the police and fired at the cops while trying to escape. "One of the accused Prabhas Mondal was taken to Suryapur early this morning for the reconstruction of the crime. He snatched a gun, fired one round at the police and tried to flee. The police fired in retaliation. Mondal was injured and rushed to the Baruipur hospital where he was declared dead by doctors," said a senior police officer of Baruipur. The alleged encounter comes less than 24 hours after West Bengal chief minister Suvendu Adhikari went to Baruipur and met the victim's parents. The parents had sought capital punishment for the accused. The family of accused castigated him for the crime. "As a mother, I feel the pain of my son's death. But I am at peace because he was punished for his wrongdoing. He tortured the girl. He died because of that. It is good. I won't even go to see and accept his dead body," Sandhya Mondal, his mother, told reporters. Mondal's wife said: "He was such a sordid man...He did something wrong and hence he was shot dead. I have nothing to say." After the girl went missing on Saturday, her body was fished out of a pond on Sunday. Preliminary autopsy report and police investigation revealed that she was raped and murdered. Following the incident, a mob lynched a 26-year-old man Indrajit Tanti, who was later found to be innocent. Police had then arrested four people, including Mondal. He led the police to the other accused. On Tuesday, Adhikari met the parents of both the girl and the man who was lynched by the mob. The encounter triggered a political row with the opposition attacking the BJP government over the police firing. "Baruipur rape murder accused Prabhash Mondal killed in encounter! What is going on @WBPolice? Bengalis please welcome new Bengal-Uttar Pradesh 2.0 @BJP4Bengal is no government. This is jungle law," TMC MP Mahua Moitra wrote on X which was reposted by the TMC....
