Mumbai, June 6 -- The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Friday demolished 234 residential and commercial structures at Amar Nagar-Khindipada in Mulund, intensifying efforts to clear land for the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR) project before the monsoon sets in. The 12.2-km GMLR corridor is being developed to provide a direct east-west connection between Goregaon and Mulund through flyovers and twin tunnels beneath the Sanjay Gandhi National Park. Civic officials say the project will cut travel time and reduce pressure on existing road networks. Officials said the demolition followed a survey conducted in 2022, which identified 296 residential and commercial structures as eligible for rehabilitation, while 89 were found ineligible. Most eligible project-affected persons have already been shifted to rehabilitation housing in Kanjurmarg. The BMC began distributing keys to rehabilitation flats from May 27. Seven 23-storey rehabilitation towers are under development at the site, with two already occupied. Friday's operation came days after a similar drive on Sunday, during which nearly 150 structures were removed. Officials said around 384 structures in Amar Nagar-Khindipada were affected by the project. Following Sunday's action and Friday's demolition, the entire stretch required for the project has largely been cleared. The civic body said the exercise was undertaken to complete pre-construction formalities ahead of the monsoon, which would allow work on the GMLR to commence soon after the rainy season....
