Youth climbs railway bridge, demands marriage to girlfriend
KANPUR, Sept. 12 -- A 20-year- old man climbed onto a railway bridge over the Ken river on Friday morning and threatened to jump unless his girlfriend was brought to the spot and allowed to marry him.
All of this began around 6am at the Bhuragarh railway bridge in Matoundh, Banda police said.
The youth, identified as Vikas Sharma, a resident of Chamraudi locality, told police that he wanted to marry a young woman from Muchiyana locality.
However, their families were opposed to the relationship.
Once on the bridge, Sharma repeatedly demanded that the woman be brought to him. He also threatened to jump into the river if she did not come.
On receiving the information, police reached the spot and spent nearly two hours trying to persuade Sharma to come down.
As a precaution, police arranged divers and boatmen below the bridge while officers continued talking to him.
Sharma, however, refused to come down until his girlfriend arrived.Police eventually persuaded the woman to come to the spot.
Sharma agreed to climb down after seeing her and was brought to safety.
He was later handed over to his family, said Arvind Sharma, in-charge of the Bhuragarh police post....
