Youth beaten to death by girlfriend's family
PRAYAGRAJ, July 11 -- A 20-year-old man was allegedly beaten to death by his girlfriend's family after he went to meet her at her house in Kaushambi district late on Thursday night. The 18-year-old woman was also allegedly thrashed while trying to protect him and is in critical condition, police said.
The incident took place in Mahua Khada village under the Manjhanpur police station limits. Acting on a complaint filed by the victim's mother, police registered a case against four members of the woman's family. Two of the accused have been arrested, while raids are being conducted to apprehend the other two.
According to police, Shiv Prasad, son of Rambadan and a resident of Dundi Bagh village, had been in a relationship with the woman for the past five years. The two were related as aunt and nephew in the extended family. The woman had been discharged from a private hospital on Thursday after being treated for an illness over the previous two days. On learning that she had returned home, Shiv Prasad went to her house that night to meet her, police said. Police said the woman's family, who allegedly opposed the relationship, found the two together and attacked Shiv Prasad with sticks, an axe and an iron rod. The woman was also allegedly beaten when she tried to intervene and save him.
After receiving a distress call from the injured youth, his family, with the assistance of UP-112 personnel, rushed him to the district hospital. After providing first aid, doctors referred him to SRN Hospital in Prayagraj for advanced treatment, but he died on the way. The woman is undergoing treatment at the district hospital, where her condition remains critical.
The body has been sent for post-mortem examination.
An FIR has been registered against the woman's father Rakesh, mother Bindi Devi, and brothers Sachiv and Durgesh, on the complaint of the deceased's mother Kunti Devi. Police have arrested Bindi Devi and Durgesh.
DSP (Crime) Shivank Singh said the youth died after being assaulted by the woman's family.
