Woman killed in fresh leopard attack in Pauri Garhwal dist
Haridwar, June 28 -- A 55-year-old woman was killed in a leopard attack in Nainidanda block of Pauri Garhwal district on Saturday morning, triggering fresh concerns over rising incidents of human-wildlife conflict in the region.
The victim, identified as Sushila Devi, a resident of Banasi Talli village in Bijlot patti, had gone to collect fodder with another woman, Shanti Devi, in the upper reaches near the village when the incident occurred.
According to forest officials and local representatives, the leopard, which was hiding in the bushes, suddenly pounced on Sushila Devi, dragged her away and fatally mauled her. Shanti Devi raised an alarm, prompting villagers to rush to the spot. By the time they reached, however, the leopard had already killed the woman.
The incident sparked resentment among villagers and the bereaved family, who accused the forest department of failing to curb repeated leopard attacks in the area.
"It is a very sad incident. Leopard movement has increased significantly in the area in recent months. We demand that the man-eater be captured immediately and that the government evolve a long-term solution to protect villagers from such attacks," said Kshetra Panchayat chief Prakirna Negi.
State Congress vice-president and Nainidanda resident Dhirendra Pratap has written to Pauri district magistrate Swati S Bhadauriya, urging immediate measures to tackle the increasing leopard menace in Nainidanda and other affected blocks, including Rikhnikhal, Jaiharikhal, Duggada, Bironkhal, Thalisain, Kot, Pauri, Khirsu and Dwarikhal.
The latest incident is the fourth fatal leopard attack reported in Pauri district this year. On June 9, a 60-year-old woman was killed by a leopard while collecting fodder in Badhi village of Kot block.
The animal was later shot dead by authorised hunters after it was found near the victim's body.
Earlier, a 72-year-old woman, Seeta Devi, was killed in Bamti village on April 23. On April 12, a 45-year-old person was killed in Gajald village, and on April 2, a four-year-old girl was killed by a leopard in Bhatkot village of Pokhra block....
