PRAYAGRAJ, May 15 -- A 22-year-old woman drowned in the Ganga at Lilapur Ghat under Sarai Inayat police station limits in Prayagraj on Thursday morning, while local youths rescued two accompanying children. The incident occurred when a group of women from Deepak Mishra's house in Lilapur Kala village went to the river to bathe ahead of a religious ceremony scheduled on Saturday at Bandhwa Bade Hanuman Temple. Among them were Deepak Mishra's sister-in-law Kamini, a resident of Akoura village in Kaushambi, along with 11-year-old Ankshika and 9-year-old Krishna. Police said the three reportedly drifted into deeper waters while bathing and began to drown. On hearing their cries, local youths bathing nearby rushed to rescue them. Vinod Kumar Shukla, Gyanu Mishra, Ravi Bhartiya and Rajendra Tiwari managed to pull both children out safely. However, Kamini was allegedly swept further into the river. After a prolonged search, the youths located her and brought her out unconscious. She was first taken to a private hospital and later referred to Swaroop Rani Hospital, but died on the way. A woman from Govindpur Colony in Teliyarganj has accused four people of cheating her out of Rs 7 lakh on the promise of securing a lecturer's job. Based on her complaint, Colonelganj police registered a case and began an investigation. The complainant, Ranjana Chaturvedi, alleged that two of the accused claimed links with senior officials and took Rs 7 lakh in May 2025 after calling her to Lucknow. She also alleged they later demanded more money and issued threats. Two children went missing after five people were swept away by strong currents in the Ganga near Mahmadpur village under Kokhraj police station limits in Kaushambi on Thursday morning.
