Woman climbs water tank after marriage alliance called off
PRAYAGRAJ, Nov. 1 -- Upset over the cancellation of her five-year-old marriage alliance, a 23-year-old woman climbed a water tank at the under-construction gram nyayalaya premises in Makhaupur village under Pipri police station area of Kaushambi on Saturday morning. She threatened to jump if her marriage was not solemnised, triggering panic among locals.
On being informed, police rushed to the spot and initially tried to pacify her by engaging her in conversation. Meanwhile, three women police personnel approached the tank from behind and managed to safely bring her down, officials said.
The woman, a resident of a village under Sarai Akil police station area, is the daughter of a daily-wage labourer.
According to her father, her marriage had been fixed five years ago with a man from a locality in Sarai Akil town. Since then, the two had remained in regular contact over the phone and had also visited each other's homes.
However, about a week ago, the man allegedly refused to go ahead with the marriage. Distressed over the development, the woman left home on Saturday morning and climbed the water tank.
