Meerut, June 28 -- A 40-year-old man died after allegedly being set on fire by his wife and her alleged lover while he was asleep. The victim succumbed to his burn injuries on Friday night during treatment at Meerut District Hospital. Police have arrested both accused and said murder charges will now be added to the case. The incident occurred on the night of June 20 in the Binoli police station area, about 38 kilometres from the Baghpat district headquarters. According to police, the deceased, Rajeev, 40, a resident of Bijwara village, was asleep in his room when his wife, Neeshu, 37, allegedly called her neighbour and alleged lover, Vikrant, 40, to the house. Investigators said Vikrant arrived carrying two litres of petrol. Police alleged that the duo entered Rajeev's room at around 1 am, poured petrol over him while he was asleep, and set him ablaze. Rajeev reportedly woke up as the petrol was poured on him and ran out of the room engulfed in flames, screaming for help. Hearing his cries, nearby residents rushed to the spot and managed to extinguish the fire. He was initially admitted to a Community Health Centre (CHC) before being referred to Meerut District Hospital due to the severity of his injuries. After battling for life for nearly a week, he died on Friday night. Before his death, Rajeev recorded a statement with the police on June 22, alleging that his wife and her alleged lover had jointly planned and executed the attack. Rajeev is survived by three children: Pari, 9, Kallu, 7, and Shiva, 4, and his father, Satbir Singh, 62. Rajeev and Neeshu had been married for about 10 years, and he worked as a daily wage labourer to support the family. According to Rajeev's family, Neeshu had allegedly been in a relationship with neighbour Vikrant for the past five years. They claimed Rajeev learned about the affair around three months ago and had repeatedly objected to the two meeting. Family members alleged that after Rajeev confronted them, Neeshu and Vikrant conspired to eliminate him. On the evening of June 20, Rajeev returned home from work, had dinner with his wife, and went to bed around 11 pm. Neeshu reportedly took the children to another room before allegedly calling Vikrant to the house later that night. Rajeev's father, Satbir Singh, said he saw Vikrant fleeing the house after the incident. He lodged an FIR against both Neeshu and Vikrant at Binoli police station on June 21, accusing them of jointly setting his son on fire after inviting Vikrant into the house. He also alleged that Vikrant had threatened to kill Rajeev before the incident....
