With 538 Amrit Sarovars, Prayagraj ranks third in UP for groundwater restoration
PRAYAGRAJ, June 1 -- Even as the summer heat has brought in water scarcity in many trans-Yamuna areas of Prayagraj district, the Amrit Sarovar initiative is emerging as an important tool for water conservation and groundwater recharge in rural areas, helping address concerns over declining water tables while strengthening water security and rural livelihoods. According to official records, Prayagraj has emerged among the top-performing districts in Uttar Pradesh under the programme, district officials say.
District coordinator (MGNREGA) Gulab Chand said that more than 538 Amrit Sarovars have been developed across rural and urban areas of the district, covering nearly 8,000 hectares. The district ranks third in the state in the construction of Amrit Sarovars, he shared.
Statewide, 19,978 Amrit Sarovars have been completed so far. Gorakhpur leads with 735 reservoirs, followed by Maharajganj with 601, while Prayagraj occupies the third position with more than 538 completed water bodies, the official said.
The reservoirs have significantly enhanced rainwater harvesting capacity in the district. Officials said the 538 Amrit Sarovars in Prayagraj can store about 5.38 million cubic metres of water, contributing to groundwater recharge and helping improve water availability in villages. Apart from water conservation, the initiative is expected to support environmental sustainability by restoring traditional water bodies and improving local ecological conditions. Each Amrit Sarovar has been developed over a minimum area of one acre with an average water-holding capacity of around 10,000 cubic metres.
Several of the reservoirs have also been developed as community spaces with paved walking tracks, benches, lighting facilities and plantation drives around their periphery, enhancing both environmental and recreational value. The initiative has also contributed to strengthening the rural economy. Excavation, desilting and beautification works associated with the reservoirs have generated employment opportunities for local residents, including women and youth, through rural employment schemes. Officials said the initiative is helping create a sustainable framework for water conservation, environmental protection and rural development while supporting long-term groundwater management in the region....
