Lucknow, June 12 -- The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court has commuted the life sentence of a man convicted of murdering his pregnant wife to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment, observing that punishment should not be based on vengeance and that convicts should be given an opportunity for reform and reintegration into society. A vacation bench comprising Justice Rajesh Singh Chauhan and Justice Indrajeet Shukla passed the order on June 3 while partly allowing the appeal of Manish, who was convicted by a Sitapur sessions court in 2019. According to the prosecution, Manish set his pregnant wife on fire on January 28, 2011, over unmet dowry demands. The court noted that he was around 21 years old at the time of the crime and has spent nearly 15 years in prison with good conduct.
