LUCKNOW, Sept. 28 -- Lucknowites heaved a sigh of relief as rain eased in the state capital on Sunday after over a 60-hour spell that disrupted normal life. The city recorded 44.5 mm of rain in the 24 hours till Sunday morning, taking the two-day total to 169.6 mm. Lucknow received 125.1 mm of rain till Saturday morning, 4,531% above normal for the day, and another 44.9 mm till Sunday morning, 2,038% above normal. Water started receding from several waterlogged areas after two days of rain, easing traffic snarls and inconvenience to commuters. The city recorded substantial rainfall at key observatories over the two days. Lucknow Hanuman Setu received 74.2 mm on Sunday after 201.2 mm the previous day; Aliganj Control Room recorded 56.6 mm after 152.2 mm; Bani received 44 mm after 106.2 mm; Malihabad 40 mm after 87.5 mm; and Lucknow Airport 36.4 mm after 135.8 mm. Lucknow has recorded 846.6 mm rainfall since June 1 against a long-period average of 675.7 mm, a 25% surplus, largely due to excess rain over the past two to three days. The Gomti river's water level was 106.11 metres on Sunday, compared with 106.8 metres on Saturday. "It is below the warning line of 108.5 metres and the danger line of 109.5 metres," said Mukesh Kumar Vaish, executive engineer, UP irrigation department. He said all Gomti gates were open, while barrels leading to canals had been shut to prevent backflow into the city. The forecast for Monday is a generally cloudy sky becoming partly cloudy, with light rain or drizzle possible. The maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to be around 29degC and 22degC. The IMD has issued no warning. Due to the overcast sky and overnight rain, the maximum and minimum temperatures on Sunday were 24degC and 21.2degC. The maximum was 9.2degC below normal. Heavy rain over the past two days flooded several parts of Lucknow, leaving knee-deep water on roads and inside homes.
