Meerut, July 30 -- District administrations across western Uttar Pradesh have completed extensive preparations to ensure the safe and smooth movement of millions of Kanwariyas, as the holy month of Sawan begins on Thursday (July 30). Authorities in Meerut, Bareilly and Muzaffarnagar have strengthened security, traffic management, food safety, medical assistance and surveillance systems, while appealing to devotees to cooperate with officials for a peaceful pilgrimage. Meerut, one of the busiest transit hubs on the Kanwar route connecting devotees to Haridwar, is preparing for an unprecedented influx of pilgrims. District authorities have reinforced infrastructure along the pilgrimage routes. Security arrangements include temporary police stations, police outposts, extensive CCTV surveillance, drone monitoring and barricading at strategic locations. Traffic diversions have been implemented, with heavy vehicles restricted from major routes, including NH-58, the Delhi-Meerut Expressway and Ganga Canal roads from late on July 29. One lane on selected highways has been reserved exclusively for Kanwariyas. In Bareilly, authorities have introduced a technology-based security framework covering Bareilly, Badaun, Pilibhit and Shahjahanpur districts. The region has been divided into three super zones, nine zones, 28 sectors and 104 sub-sectors to facilitate effective crowd management and rapid response. Security arrangements in Muzaffarnagar have been elevated to the highest level with the deployment of the Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) and several specialised security units. On Wednesday, at Shiv Chowk, SSP Verma and SP City Jain welcomed Kanwariyas by showering flower petals on them and extended wishes for a safe pilgrimage.
