Weekly audit of Ram Mandir donations likely
Lucknow, June 23 -- A weekly audit of donations offered by devotees at the Ram Mandir is likely to be introduced as part of a revamped administrative framework following the alleged donation-money scam.
The three-member Special Investigation Team (SIT), which is preparing its report on the scam, is expected to recommend several measures to prevent chances of future embezzlement. According to senior state government officials, weekly auditing of donations received at the temple may be made mandatory. The SIT could also recommend maintaining daily records of cash offerings deposited by devotees.
One of the biggest challenges faced by the SIT was the limited availability of digital evidence, as CCTV footage at the temple complex is currently stored for only 45 days. Officials said the SIT may recommend extending the storage period to 180 days to aid future investigations. "The SIT could suggest enhancing CCTV data retention from the existing 45 days to 180 days," said a senior state government official.
Due to the limited digital evidence, investigators have largely relied on statements from witnesses, suspects and officials associated with the temple administration, sources said.
The SIT is in the final stages of preparing its report, which is expected to be submitted to the chief minister within the next seven days.
The state government constituted the three-member SIT on June 13 at the request of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust. The team reached Ayodhya on June 15 and returned to Lucknow yesterday.
