GORAKHPUR, Aug. 30 -- A 34-year-old gold trader from Siddharthnagar district died after being swept away by a sudden surge of water while bathing near a waterfall in Butwal, Nepal, on Saturday morning, officials and family members said. The deceased, Prabhat Soni, a resident of Itwa, had travelled to Nepal with his mother, Manju Devi, sister Anchal and younger brother Shivam to celebrate Raksha Bandhan at his maternal grandparents' home. The family had gone sightseeing in Butwal on Saturday when they stopped near a waterfall while on their way to the Siddheshwar Baba temple. According to officials, a sudden gush of water came down from the mountain and swept Soni away. His family immediately alerted local residents and the Nepali authorities, following which a search and rescue operation was launched. Itwa SHO Anil Dubey said Soni's body was eventually recovered from a stream nearly 18 km from the waterfall. He had sustained serious head injuries. "Information has been received about the death of an Itwa resident in an accident in Butwal, Nepal. His family members have gone there. The Nepali police are carrying out the necessary legal proceedings," Dubey said. Following the tragedy, Soni's father, Awadhesh Soni, and other family members travelled to Nepal.
