PRAYAGRAJ/JHANSI, Sept. 4 -- In a bid to improve passenger amenities, onboard hygiene and cleanliness along railway tracks, the Wagon Repair Workshop, Jhansi, of North Central Railway (NCR) has developed and successfully prototyped a high-capacity garbage disposal system for LHB (Linke Hofmann Busch) coaches, NCR officials said on Thursday. Standard LHB passenger coaches currently have two onboard dustbins with a capacity of around 18 litres each. On long-distance journeys, the limited capacity often leads to overflowing bins, littering inside coaches and hygiene concerns. To address the problem, the Jhansi workshop has developed an integrated waste transfer and storage system comprising three components-a "Garbage Drop Box," a "Connector," and a "Garbage Collector," NCR chief public relations officer Dr Shivam Sharma said. "Using a simple gravity-fed mechanism, waste deposited in the drop box immediately moves into the sealed undergear collector, keeping odour and litter away from the passenger area," Sharma said. The new waste collector has a capacity of 367.4 litres, compared with about 18 litres in the existing arrangement, he added.
