VARANASI, July 8 -- A group of Ganga cleaning volunteers on Tuesday submitted a memorandum to municipal commissioner Himanshu Nagpal, requesting him to ensure disposal of plastic and other waste lying scattered on the sandy banks of the Ganga here. Led by activist Rajesh Shukla, they requested the disposal of the garbage and Nirmalaya (offerings) scattered on the banks. Shukla said, we explained to the municipal commissioner that if this waste is cleared before the onset of floods, it would prevent the debris from washing away into the river, thereby significantly boosting efforts to purify the Ganga. The volunteers also assured the municipal commissioner of their full cooperation with VNN staff in this endeavor. Accepting their request, Nagpal directed sanitation wing officials to deploy a team of sanitation workers. The volunteers said timely removal of the waste will help to improve the condition of the ghats ahead of the monsoon season....
