LUCKNOW, Sept. 8 -- Upsets stole the spotlight on Day One of the AITA Championship Series U-12 and U-14 at the Vijayant Khand Stadium here on Monday. While several top seeds advanced in routine fashion, a few surprising results reshuffled the draw and injected drama into the young tournament. The biggest shock in the girls' Under-14 draw came late in the pre-quarter round when third seed Anvesha Singh fell to Virika Agrawal in a rollercoaster match, 6-2, 1-6, 10-8. After splitting the opening sets, the match tiebreak turned into a tense tug-of-war. Virika held her nerve in the decisive points, converting match opportunities and sealing a statement victory that marks her as a player to watch as the week progresses. The upset trend was lighter but still present in the boys' draws. In the Under-14s, seeds largely held, with notable straight-set wins from top names such as Tejas Singh (1) and Yuvraaj Singh (2), but a few close contests hinted at deeper competition. The 29th UP State Senior Athletics Championship will be held in Bareilly on September 26 and 27 under the aegis of the Uttar Pradesh Athletics Association.
