MEERUT, Aug. 28 -- Even as his protest continued for the seventh consecutive day at Commissionerate Park here on Thursday, Ravi Gautam, an accused in the violence at the Meerut collectorate gate, announced to hold a mahapanchayat at the commissionerate on August 30. Gautam said the transfer of then SSP Avinash Pandey was not enough and demanded further action against police officials over the alleged assault during a protest linked to the Lalita Gautam case. He sought an investigation into the alleged possession of assets disproportionate to known sources of income by Pandey and SP (rural) Abhijeet Kumar, besides demanding FIRs against both officers and all police personnel allegedly involved in the assault. Gautam said the mahapanchayat would be held to press for these demands and that he would continue his agitation until concrete action was taken. The controversy is linked to the death of Dalit student Lalita Gautam, whose body was found in the Rohta police station area. Her family had levelled allegations against other people and demanded action against those allegedly responsible. On July 8, members of the Scheduled Caste community staged a protest at the collectorate gate, demanding the arrest of the accused in the case. The demonstration continued for around three hours, following which police used batons to clear the road and restore traffic movement. The incident escalated after a video purportedly showing then-SSP Avinash Pandey slapping Ravi Gautam several times inside a police detention vehicle circulated on social media. The video triggered widespread discussion and brought the police action during the protest under scrutiny. Following Gautam's announcement of the August 30 mahapanchayat, police have begun efforts to prevent the proposed gathering. Meerut SP (city) Vinayak Gopal Bhosle confirmed that Gautam had announced the mahapanchayat.
