LUCKNOW, Sept. 28 -- Incessant rain over the past three days has disrupted Lucknow's vegetable supply chain even as waterlogging at the city's main Dubagga wholesale market and a sharp fall in truck arrivals have led to a rise in the prices of several kitchen essentials. Most vegetables supplied by local vendors could not reach Mandi (wholesale market). The disruption was particularly severe at Dubagga Mandi on Hardoi Road and Alambagh Mandi where waterlogging affected wholesale operations and damaged stocks of onion, garlic, potato and tomato. Traders said poor drainage compounded the problem. Dubagga normally receives around 30 trucks of vegetables a day, but only 8-9 trucks arrived amid the rain. At Sitapur Mandi, where 8-10 trucks normally arrive, arrivals fell to just 1-2 trucks. Alambagh, which generally receives 2-4 trucks, got only one. Tinku, a wholesale vegetable dealer, said, "Retail prices have shot up sharply in markets such as Alambagh, Sitapur Road and Dubagga. Garlic crossed Rs 200 a kg, while ginger rose to Rs 180-200 a kg. Lemon was selling for as much as Rs 250 a kg, while onion and tomato touched around Rs 200 for 5 kg."htc...
