VARANASI, Sept. 20 -- A special awareness program was organised in the district on Saturday to mark International Snakebite Awareness Day. Held under the 'Seva Sankalp Abhiyan' (Service Pledge Campaign), the event brought together ASHA workers, ANMs, CHOs, health personnel and a large group of villagers to discuss snakebite prevention, first aid, and the critical need for timely medical intervention. Centering on this year's theme "Snakebite Survivors and Rescuers: Agents of Change", the programme highlighted the experiences of survivors and rescue workers as inspiration for the community. Chief medical officer (CMO) Dr NP Singh emphasised that snakebites are medical emergencies that require immediate action. He urged residents to avoid panic and, crucially, to bypass traditional, non-scientific methods such as jhad-phoonk (ritualistic healing) or unverified home remedies. Instead, he stressed that victims should be rushed to the nearest health center or hospital immediately.
