VARANASI, Aug. 21 -- With the Ganga river approaching the warning mark of 70.262 meters in Varanasi, police and district administrative officials have been placed on high alert to handle potential flooding. According to the Central Water Commission, the river stood at 68.50 metres and continues to follow a rising trend. Police commissioner Mohit Agrawal and district magistrate Satyendra Kumar conducted a joint inspection on Thursday to assess water levels and review disaster response measures. Utilising water police and NDRF boats, officials surveyed riverside areas along the Ganga and Varuna rivers, starting from Namo Ghat to the confluence point, as well as flood-prone neighborhoods including Salarpur, Saraiya, Konia, Pul Kohna, Dhelvaria and Sarai Mohana. DM Satyendra Kumar instructed teams to ensure continuous monitoring, set up active control rooms, and keep pre-identified relief camps fully operational with access routes, lighting, drinking water and sanitation facilities ready for immediate deployment. Police commissioner Mohit Agrawal directed water police and security personnel to maintain heightened vigilance at sensitive locations to ensure "zero response time" during emergency evacuations.
