Varanasi court allows revision plea over Rahul Gandhi's alleged remarks on Lord Ram
VARANASI, June 11 -- An MP-MLA court here on Wednesday set aside a lower court order dismissing a complaint against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over his alleged remarks made during an event at Brown University in 2025, in which he allegedly described Lord Ram as a mythological and fictional figure.
Special Judge (MP-MLA) Yajurveda Vikram Singh allowed a revision petition against the order of the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (MP-MLA) court and directed that the complaint be heard afresh and decided in accordance with law, advocate Harishankar Pandey said.
Pandey alleged that Gandhi's statement hurt his religious sentiments and those of millions of Hindus. According to the complaint, Gandhi referred to Lord Ram as a mythological figure while describing him as a symbol of compassion, forgiveness and righteousness during an event at Brown University in Boston.
The complaint was dismissed on May 27, 2025, with the lower court holding that prosecution would require prior sanction from the central government as the alleged statement was made abroad.
Pandey challenged the order through a revision petition, which was transferred to the MP-MLA court for hearing. He said no one appeared on behalf of Gandhi despite summons being issued.
Allowing the petition, the court held that prior sanction from the central government was not required at the stage of filing or entertaining the complaint. It observed that Gandhi, though a Member of Parliament, does not fall within the category of public servants for whom such sanction is mandatory in the circumstances of the case.
The court held that the complaint could not be rejected on technical grounds and directed the lower court to reconsider the matter and pass an order in accordance with law.
The case will now be heard afresh by the lower court....
