UPP launch campaign in football league with big win
LUCKNOW, July 14 -- Contrasting wins marked the day in the District Football League 2026 here on Monday, at the Chowk Stadium. Whereas UP Police ran riot in the curtain-raiser before Spring Dale Club and Midwinter Club shared spoils in the second game.
UP Police stamped their authority early against SR Club, racing into a 2-0 lead inside the first quarter-hour. Gaurav set the tone with a composed finish in the third minute, and Aman Singh doubled the advantage in the 13th with a neat strike from the edge of the box.
UP Police's tempo never dipped as they continued to press, and Shiv Damal added a third just before half-time, heading home in the 45th minute to leave SR Club reeling. The visitors' hopes collapsed early in the second half as Gaurav completed his brace in the 47th minute, curling past the keeper to make it 4-0.
Aman Singh sealed a comprehensive 5-0 victory with his second of the night in the 37th minute - a well-timed run and finish that underlined UP Police's clinical edge in both transition and set-play situations. c
Defensively solid and dangerous on the break, UP Police dominated possession and chances throughout.
The evening continued with a tighter affair as Spring Dale Club and Midwinter Club played out a 1-1 draw.
Nitin gave Spring Dale an early lead in the 10th minute with a calm finish after a slick team move. Midwinter rallied and earned parity when Yash struck in the 40th minute, slotting home from close range to level before halftime.
Both sides fought for control after the break but failed to convert further opportunities, sharing a point apiece.
On Tuesday, LDA (B) take on UJE Club at 3:00 p.m. in the first match of the day, whereas RA Boys Club meet Elite Club at 4:30 p.m. in the second match.
Lucknow's Suyash Awasthi has been appointed captain of the Indian men's junior team for the 19th Asian Men's Junior Under-21 Handball Championship, scheduled to be held in Chuzhou, China from July 15 to 26. Another boy from Lucknow, Nihal Singh, has also secured a spot in the team.
Both Awasthi and Singh are currently training at the KD Singh 'Babu' Stadium under the guidance of coach Tauheed. Awasthi was a member of the gold-medal-winning Indian youth team at the IHF Youth and Junior Men's Trophy (Zone 2 Asia Championship) held in Jaipur in 2024.
Additionally, he was part of the silver-medal-winning Indian youth team at the IHF Trophy Men's Youth and Junior Handball (Continental Phase - Asia) held in Lucknow in 2025. He also won a silver medal representing Uttar Pradesh at the 47th National Junior Boys' Handball Championship held in 2025. Nihal Singh was also a member of the Uttar Pradesh team that won the silver medal at this championship.
The Lucknow Amateur Aquatic Association is going to organise 36th Sub-Jr and Junior Lucknow District Swimming Championship-2026 in memory of Mohd Haider on July 14 and 15, at the KD Singh 'Babu' Stadium here. Around 200 swimmers from all schools and clubs are expected to participate in different age categories of both boys and girls....
