Lucknow, May 26 -- Uttar Pradesh has achieved the top position among states in meeting peak electricity demand after supplying a record 31,824 megawatt on Sunday night, surpassing Maharashtra's 29,463 mw and marking the highest electricity supply recorded by any state in the country so far, energy minister AK Sharma claimed. The achievement comes amid an intense summer and mounting pressure on the power sector, with the state government asserting that it has maintained supply levels despite rising demand and local disruptions in some areas. Meanwhile, Sharma on Monday held a meeting with senior energy department officials to review the prevailing power situation and discuss long-term preparations to tackle the steady rise in electricity demand in the coming years. The minister said the previous highest peak demand met in Uttar Pradesh in 2025 was 31,486 mw. However, on May 24, the state crossed that level and successfully met a peak demand of 31,824 mw at 10.29pm, setting a fresh benchmark. According to official figures, electricity supply stood at 29,933 mw at 1am and rose to 30,569 mw at 3am during the intervening night of May 24-25. Supply remained at 29,573 mw at 5am and 27,392mw at 10am on May 25, while demand of 29,616 mw was met at 2pm. Additional chief secretary (Energy) and UPPCL chairman Ashish Kumar Goyal said all officers and employees had been deployed on a "war footing". UPPCL director (distribution) Gyanendra Dhar Dwivedi said uninterrupted 24-hour power supply was maintained on Sunday in metropolitan cities, urban areas, tehsils, nagar panchayats, divisional headquarters and industrial areas. "In Bundelkhand, power supply was disrupted for only 22 minutes," he said. Dwivedi added that rural areas received electricity for an average of 22 to 22.5 hours against the prescribed roster of 18 hours.
