LUCKNOW, July 2 -- Uttar Pradesh director general of Prison Administration and Reform Services P.C. Meena on Wednesday directed prison officials across the state to adopt a zero-tolerance policy toward inmate suicides and jailbreaks, while ordering tighter surveillance and enhanced security measures in all jails. Chairing a statewide review meeting via video conference from the Prison Headquarters, Meena reviewed prison operations with deputy inspectors general, senior superintendents, superintendents and in-charge superintendents. He instructed officials to ensure time-bound disposal of pending departmental and human rights cases, warning that delays would not be tolerated. Emphasising security, Meena ordered CCTV coverage of all vulnerable locations and continuous surveillance of every functional barrack. He also reviewed the installation of additional CCTV cameras, strengthening of prison perimeter fencing and real-time monitoring through the Jarvis surveillance system linked to the video wall at the state headquarters. Warning against negligence, the DG said strict action would be taken against any officer found lax in maintaining prison security or preventing untoward incidents. The meeting also reviewed monthly alarm drills, transfer of inmates to model prisons, utilisation of maintenance funds, welfare measures for children living with women inmates, issuance of disability certificates to eligible prisoners and compassionate appointments for dependents of deceased employees....
