UP lose to Mumbai as Deepti has quiet outing
LUCKNOW, Nov. 3 -- For the first time this season, India all-rounder Deepti Sharma was drafted into the Uttar Pradesh squad for the Senior Women's T20 Trophy Elite Group D, with hopes of strengthening the side. However, her inclusion made little impact against Mumbai on Monday, as she went wicketless and was dismissed for a first-ball duck.
Mumbai produced a disciplined all-round performance to defeat Uttar Pradesh by 29 runs at MCA Ground 2, Gahunje, Pune. In a rain-curtailed nine-over contest, Mumbai posted 84 for 2 before restricting Uttar Pradesh to 55 for 6.
Mumbai's innings was anchored by Sanika Chalke, who made a fluent 33 off 24 balls, striking three fours and a six at a strike rate of 138.
Jemimah Rodrigues provided valuable support with an unbeaten 26 from 19 deliveries, while Simran Shaikh added a quickfire 12 not out off six balls.
After Humairaa Kaazi fell early for two, Chalke and Rodrigues built momentum through the middle overs. Chalke's dismissal at 63 for 2 in the seventh over was Mumbai's only further loss, and they finished at 84 for 2 at a run rate of 9.33. For Uttar Pradesh, Khushi Tyagi was the most economical bowler, taking 1 for 4 in two overs. Sandhya Chhetri also claimed a wicket, while Deepti conceded 25 runs in two overs without success.
Chasing 85, Uttar Pradesh slumped early. Deepti was out for a duck in the opening over, and Muskan Malik followed without scoring, leaving the side at 1 for 2.
Varnika Singh top-scored with 15 off 14 balls, while Ayushi Soni made 14 from 13, but Mumbai's bowlers struck at regular intervals.
Nidhi Gharat was the pick of the attack, returning 3 for 6 in two overs and dismissing Varnika Singh, Ayushi Soni and Nishu Choudhary.
Saima Thakor took 2 for 3, while Sayali Satghare chipped in with 1 for 8. Their combined effort reduced Uttar Pradesh to 49 for 6 by the eighth over.
