KANPUR, Sept. 8 -- The Indian embassy in Moscow has responded to an Indian woman's distress call, alleging that her husband was detained by Moscow police and feared he was being pressured to join the Russian army. She alleged that a shortage of personnel in the Russian military had led to attempts to recruit foreign nationals, including Indians. The response came after Sneha Gupta, who claimed she's based in Moscow, shared a video on social media appealing to Prime minister Narendra Modi and UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath to intervene and help in securing the safe return of her husband Chandan Gupta. HT could not independently confirm the veracity of the video. The family is originally from Kanpur and Chandan works as an engineer with a company based in Sector 62, Noida, which also has business operations in Russia. He had travelled to Russia on a work visa for an assignment with the firm, said Sneha. There was no immediate comment from the firm at the time of filing this report. The Indian embassy in Russia stated that it had taken note of a Kanpur engineer's alleged detention in Moscow and was in touch with his family and local authorities to assist in the matter. In a post on X, the embassy said a social media post by the man's wife pertains to a legal matter under investigation, and added that it sought consular access for assistance. "We have seen a social media post by an Indian national regarding her husband. We are in touch with her and local authorities. As per law enforcement, it is a legal matter under investigation. The Embassy has also sought consular access," it stated on the micro-blogging platform. Sneha said she lives in Moscow with her husband Chandan Gupta and their 10-year-old son. In the video, she claimed that her husband was taken into custody by Moscow police around 12.30pm on Sunday. Sneha said she was stranded in Moscow with her son and did not know the language there and hence didn't know what to do next. She claimed her husband had done nothing wrong but was nevertheless detained and taken to jail, and that pressure was subsequently put on him to join the Russian army. The woman also claimed he had been harassed shortly before his detention. Visibly distressed in the video, she appealed to people to share it widely and urged the authorities to act swiftly to secure his safe return.
