UP cracks down on graft, assets beyond income
Lucknow, May 22 -- The Uttar Pradesh Vigilance Establishment and Anti-Corruption Organisation intensified action against corruption on Thursday, registering disproportionate assets cases against two officials and arresting five government employees in separate bribery cases across the state.
The vigilance establishment booked former block development officer Ajay Pratap Singh for allegedly amassing assets worth over Rs.77 lakh beyond his known sources of income.
According to officials, Singh, currently posted as deputy commissioner (self-employment) in Moradabad and previously serving in Barabanki's Harrayya block, allegedly earned around Rs.1.92 crore between April 1998 and June 2022 but incurred expenditure and acquired assets worth nearly Rs.2.69 crore. A case under the Prevention of Corruption Act was registered at the Ayodhya sector vigilance police station after prosecution sanction was granted in March 2026.
In another case, the vigilance establishment registered an FIR against Firozabad-based excise inspector Kaushal Kumar for allegedly possessing disproportionate assets worth Rs.31.18 lakh. Investigators claimed the officer spent and invested around Rs.1.91 crore against a known income of Rs.1.60 crore during the check period.
Meanwhile, anti-corruption teams arrested three employees in separate trap operations. In Basti, a sanitation worker attached to the Kaptanganj block office was caught allegedly taking Rs.25,000 for facilitating appointment as an Anganwadi helper. In Balrampur, senior assistant Mohanlal Jaiswal was arrested outside the chief medical officer's office while allegedly accepting Rs.5,000 linked to a med- ical reimbursement inquiry report.
In Agra, consolidation department peon Rajesh Kumar was caught allegedly taking Rs.4,000 for entering a complainant's name in inheritance records.
Separately, the vigilance establishment arrested acting regional Ayurvedic and Unani medical officer Arjun Lal Ahirwar and junior assistant Ramkrishna Gupta in Lalitpur while allegedly accepting Rs.1 lakh as the first instalment of a bribe for issuing a clinic licence....
