UP bowlers toil as Railways seize control
LUCKNOW, Nov. 5 -- After their batters had failed to make the most of a promising start, Uttar Pradesh's bowlers too found the going tough against hosts Railways on the second day of their Under-23 Col CK Nayudu Trophy Elite Group B match, at the Railway Cricket Ground at Rajkot on Wednesday.
Railways finished the day at 344 for seven in 115 overs, taking a handy first-innings lead of 165 runs with three wickets still in hand. Uttar Pradesh, former joint runners-up in the competition, had been dismissed for 179 in 55.5 overs on the opening day after choosing to bat. Left-arm spinner Om Singh had ripped through their line-up with six wickets, leaving the visitors with plenty to defend.
Resuming at 75 for three, Railways built steadily through the day. Abhishek Kaushal anchored the innings with a patient, unbeaten 127 off 290 balls, striking ten fours and occupying the crease for more than seven hours. His innings proved the difference as Uttar Pradesh's attack struggled to break through on a surface that offered little assistance.
Kaushal found useful support from Sarvesh Rohilla, who made a brisk 51 off 58 balls with four boundaries and two sixes, and Garv Sangwan, who contributed 34. Earlier, Virat Jaiswal made 40 and opener Deepanshu Chaudhary 25, ensuring Railways recovered from early setbacks.
For Uttar Pradesh, leg-spinner Vipraj Nigam was the most successful bowler, returning figures of five for 129 from 47 disciplined overs.
He removed Deepanshu Chaudhary, Jayant Kaiwart, Sarvesh Rohilla, Garv Sangwan and Dharmendra Thakur, but could not prevent Railways from accumulating runs at close to three an over. Ayush Choudhary picked up two for 60, while Aquib Khan, Vishal Nishad, Sameer Rizvi and Swastik Chikara went wicketless.
The bowling figures told the story of Uttar Pradesh's frustration. Apart from Nigam, none of the bowlers could sustain pressure for long periods, and the side conceded 13 extras. Kaushal and Rohilla added 84 runs for the fifth wicket, while the seventh-wicket stand of eight runs between Kaushal and Dharmendra Thakur further stretched the lead....
