UP athletes' stellar run: Triple delight for Gulveer; Prachi strikes gold in 4x400m relay
LUCKNOW, Sept. 30 -- Uttar Pradesh athletes continued their stellar run on Day 11 of the Asian Games on Tuesday, with Aligarh's Gulveer Singh and Saharanpur's Prachi Choudhary cementing their names in Indian track and field history.
Ace long-distance runner Gulveer clinched bronze in the men's 5,000m event, becoming the first Indian man to win three individual track and field medals at a single edition of the Asian Games. Meanwhile, Prachi anchored the women's 4x400m relay team to a gold medal, a victory that pushed India's overall medal tally past the 50-mark and into the top 10 standings.
Gulveer had first upgraded his previous edition's bronze to a brilliant silver in the 10,000m event (28:29.38), followed it up by clocking a stunning personal best to bag silver in the 1,500m event (3:36.72) and finally sealed a historic bronze in the 5,000m (13:32.75) on Tuesday.
His journey from running barefoot in an Aligarh village to ruling continental tracks is a shining beacon of perseverance.
Prachi Choudhary also showed her mettle. After winning a bronze medal in the women's 400m, clocking 53.21 seconds on Saturday, she came back with flying colours on Tuesday, winning a gold medal in the women's 4x400m relay with a timing of 3:29.69 sec. Vithya Ramraj, Kiran and Machettira Poovamma were the other members of the relay team.
Gulveer's achievement is a testament to the fact that extraordinary destiny often begins with the most humble strides. Long before he was standing on international podiums, Gulveer was just a young boy running barefoot through the dusty lanes of Sirsa village in Atrauli, Aligarh. Born into a modest farming family, his initial motivation had nothing to do with sporting glory; he ran out of a stark necessity to build endurance, purely aiming to clear the physical recruitment trials for the Indian Army to support his household.
His life took a pivotal turn in 2018 when he successfully enlisted as a soldier in the 23 Grenadiers Unit. It was during his second year of service while stationed in the rugged terrains of Arunachal Pradesh that he discovered competitive athletics through an inter-unit cross-country race. Spotting his raw talent, the army system-most notably the Army Sports Institute and coach Yunus Khan - nurtured his untapped potential into elite distance running prowess. Gulveer's early ambition was modest: he merely wanted to perform well enough to secure a promotion to Havildar. Instead, his insatiable work ethic propelled him onto the global stage.
By 2025 and 2026, Gulveer had rewritten the Indian athletics record books, setting national marks across multiple categories. He became the first Indian ever to clock a sub-hour half-marathon and the first Asian athlete to break the 13-minute barrier in the indoor 5,000m. His consistency translated into excellence at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, where he bagged a historic double - a silver in the 10,000m and bronze in the 5,000m.
The success journey of Prachi Choudhary is also a testament to relentless grit and sacrifice, rooted in the rural landscape of Saharanpur, UP. Born into a modest farming family, her early athletic dreams were fuelled by absolute determination. Recognising her raw talent, her father made significant personal compromises, even borrowing money to buy her a first pair of professional running spikes.
The turning point in her career came in 2014, when Prachi made the bold and life-altering decision to leave Uttar Pradesh. Seeking professional training and elite facilities that were unavailable in her hometown, she relocated to the sporting hub of Patiala, Punjab. Transitioning from running on the rough, unpaved roads of her village to the rigorous synthetic tracks of Patiala tested her mental fortitude.
Away from family comfort, she embraced a gruelling grind that yielded spectacular dividends. By 2018, she announced herself on the national stage at the Guwahati Inter-State Championships, clocking a brilliant 52.96 seconds. Her stellar performances soon earned her a spot in the national setup and employment with the Indian Railways. Representing the country, she secured relay silver medals at both the 2019 Asian Athletics Championships in Doha and the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou. She then achieved the ultimate dream of representing India at the Paris 2024 Olympics....
