VARANASI, Sept. 11 -- Union minister of state for defence Sanjay Seth visited Dhamupur village in Ghazipur on Thursday to pay homage to Company Quartermaster Havildar (CQMH) Abdul Hamid, the legendary 4 grenadiers soldier posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra for his supreme sacrifice during the 1965 Indo-Pak War. Wing Commander Debartho Dhar, the ministry of defence spokesperson in Prayagraj, stated that a solemn ceremony was held at the martyr's ancestral village to mark his death anniversary. The wreath-laying ceremony was attended by a host of civil and military dignitaries, including the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Purva UP and MP Sub Area, the Commandant of the 39 Gorkha Training Centre (GTC), senior military officers, veterans, and members of the martyr's family. Notably, Captain Yogendra Singh Yadav (Retd), also a Param Vir Chakra recipient, was present to pay his respects. During the commemoration, officials recalled CQMH Hamid's pivotal role in the Battle of Asal Uttar in the Khem Karan sector on September 10, 1965. Facing a fierce armoured assault spearheaded by enemy Patton tanks, Hamid-armed with a 106 mm recoilless (RCL) gun mounted on a jeep-displayed exceptional tactical acumen. By taking up a vulnerable position directly in the path of the advancing enemy armour, he engaged the targets with deadly precision, destroying multiple tanks and successfully blunting the enemy offensive. Despite being critically wounded under heavy shelling, Hamid continued to fight until his final breath, embodying the Indian Army's motto of "Service Before Self."...
