Dehradun, July 28 -- Special task force (STF) probing the alleged theft of donations from the counting room at Badrinath Dham has intensified its investigation by examining the bank accounts, financial transactions and properties of the two arrested individuals, seeking to determine whether the accused amassed assets disproportionate to their known sources of income or carried out suspicious financial transactions linked to the alleged theft, officials said on Monday. Badrinath station house officer (SHO) Mahadev Uniyal said, "We are examining the bank accounts, financial transactions and immovable properties of the two arrested accused to ascertain whether they have accumulated assets disproportionate to their known sources of income or were involved in any suspicious financial transactions linked to the theft." On July 25, a Chamoli court denied rejected both the police custody remand application and the bail plea of Nautiyal. However, on Monday Chamoli court sent Nautiyal to four-day remand. Police are yet to recover the allegedly stolen cash, gold and silver coins from Nautiyal. So far, only a Shaligram stone has been recovered from him. Meanwhile, the police recovered foreign currency, saffron and other materials like ghee from Chauhan's allotted ac`commodation at Badrinath temple. The alleged donation theft is being investigated on multiple fronts. A four-member internal committee constituted by the BKTC has submitted its preliminary report to the committee chairman. Separately, a police SIT is probing the case, while a high-level committee constituted by the Uttarakhand government is conducting an independent inquiry. The alleged theft came to light after a Hindu right-wing organisation, Bhairav Sena Sangathan, on July 2 submitted a memorandum to the BKTC CEO, demanding immediate administrative action and registration of an FIR over alleged financial irregularities involving a personal assistant to the BKTC chairman. In the memorandum, the outfit warned of a public protest if strict action was not initiated in the matter. The same day, the BKTC ordered a probe into the matter. In May, the BKTC had ordered an investigation into allegations that temple committee funds were misused for accommodation, meals and helicopter rides for politicians and their associates. As the investigation progressed, the SIT also questioned former temple officer Rajendra Chauhan before arresting him for his alleged role in the case. He too was produced before a court and remanded to judicial custody. Both accused are currently lodged in Pursari District Jail. Officials said the SIT is working to establish the complete sequence of events and determine how the alleged diversion of offerings was carried out.
