Tying knot in hosp to stop wedding dreams from coming to naught
KANPUR, May 17 -- Marriages are made in heaven, but sometimes they are solemnised in a hospital. Uttar Pradesh witnessed two such instances this week: first in Gorakhpur and now in Kanpur, proving that true bonds outlast adversity.
In the latest instance, a man married his fiancee in the burns ward of a private hospital on Saturday, two days after she suffered serious injuries in a fire during pre-wedding celebrations at her home in Ghatampur, Kanpur.
The ceremony took place inside a private hospital in Jajmau, where 23-year-old Garima Singh is undergoing treatment. With permission from the hospital administration, relatives and nursing staff decorated a section of the ward with flowers before the rituals were performed beside her hospital bed. There was no wedding procession or music, only close family members gathered around as Vikas Singh, 27, applied sindoor and completed the ceremony.
The wedding had originally been scheduled for Thursday at Garima's home in Jagannathpur village. According to relatives, the accident took place during a mehendi function on May 13 when a leak in an LPG cylinder pipe triggered a fire in the kitchen. In the confusion that followed, a pan of hot oil overturned, injuring several people who had rushed in to help. Garima, her father Jagdish Singh and a photographer were among the 12 people who suffered burn injuries.
The injured were first taken to the Ghatampur community health centre before being referred to hospitals in Kanpur. Family members said doctors and relatives had suggested postponing the wedding after the bride was admitted for treatment, but the groom insisted the ceremony should go ahead.
"A relationship is not only for good times," a relative quoted Vikas as telling the family. "If I step back now, it would be unfair to her."
Dr Surendra Patel, managing director of Mishika hospital, said the hospital allowed the ceremony after discussions with both families. "Some members of the nursing staff volunteered to help arrange the space inside the ward," he said, adding that Garima's condition was stable and she was recovering.
The wedding has drawn attention locally and on social media.
Earlier this week, a man solemnised a marriage inside the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a private hospital in Gorakhpur after doctors reportedly permitted the ceremony under necessary precautions.
Bride Pooja Yadav, 25, an LLM student, was seriously injured on Wednesday (May 13) afternoon while returning to Gorakhpur from Khalilabad after an examination on her wedding day. She was rushed to a private hospital in Gorakhpur, where doctors admitted her to ICU for treatment.
Despite the incident, groom Sunny Yadav, 29, a resident of Mahua village, decided to continue with the marriage....
