Two-month-old dies days after vaccination; family alleges negligence
LUCKNOW, April 11 -- Police initiated an inquiry following the death of a two-month-old infant in Rahimabad area of Lucknow four days after vaccination on Friday.
The family alleged the child died due to complications following vaccination and submitted a written complaint to the police, even as health officials denied any such link.
The incident took place in Gahdo village under Rahimabad police station limits, where a vaccination drive was conducted on April 6 by a team from the Community Health Centre (CHC), Mal. The deceased infant, identified as Umar, was among those vaccinated.
According to the family, the child's condition started deteriorating soon after the vaccination.
Father Sahil alleged that his son developed black patch-like marks on the body and even bled from the nose before succumbing four days later on Friday. "We informed the CHC, ASHA worker and nurse, but there was no improvement," he said.
Sahil approached police officials and submitted a written complaint.
Later his son's body was brought to KGMU for postmortem on Friday morning.
The family claimed that four to five other children vaccinated the same day have fallen ill.
However, the office of the Chief Medical Officer stated that a total of around 187 infants were vaccinated across 32 camps in the Mal area on April 6, including 20 children in Gahdo village.
"Out of these, eight children in the same village were vaccinated using doses from a single vial (Injection Bottle) of the same batch. Mild symptoms like fever are common after vaccination but usually occur within 24 hours. "The allegations linking the death directly to the vaccine appear unfounded at this stage," the office added.
Meanwhile, Rahimabad Station House Officer Arun Kumar Trigunayak said that the matter is under investigation. "The body has been sent for postmortem, and the exact cause of death will be ascertained only after the report," he said....
