Two minor brothers drown in Ganga while bathing
PRAYAGRAJ, June 10 -- Two teenage brothers drowned while bathing in the Ganga at a riverside ghat in Prayagraj's trans-Yamuna region on Tuesday morning. According to police, a third teenager related to them was rescued by a boatman after all three slipped into deep water.
The deceased were identified as Rajan Yadav (16) and his younger brother Abhishek Yadav (13), residents of Mungari Saldi-Ka-Pura village under the Rampur police outpost area of the Industrial police station.
The brothers had gone to bathe in the Ganga at Maniya village ghat around 9.30 am along with their relative, Sunny Yadav, when the incident occurred.
According to police and local residents, the three boys ventured into the river and were swept into deeper waters, where they began struggling to stay afloat. On noticing them drowning, a family member, Pankaj Yadav, jumped into the river in an attempt to rescue them. However, he too began to drown and managed to return to safety with difficulty. Hearing cries for help, a boatman stationed at the ghat rushed to the spot and succeeded in rescuing Sunny. Rajan and Abhishek, however, disappeared beneath the water.
After being alerted, police reached the scene and launched a search operation with the assistance of local divers. Following an extensive search, the two brothers were pulled out of the river and rushed to the Karachhana CHC, where doctors declared them dead. Their bodies were later sent for post-mortem examination, said SHO Kamlesh Patel.
A Class 12 student allegedly died by suicide in the Meja area of Prayagraj on Tuesday morning, with her family accusing a neighbour of harassing and threatening her, police said.
The girl's body was found hanging inside a room at her residence. According to family members, a youth from the neighbourhood had allegedly been harassing and molesting her for several months.
The victim's father, a farmer and resident of a village in the Meja area, alleged that the accused, identified as Sachin, had been troubling his daughter for a long time. He claimed that on Monday evening, when the girl stepped out of the house, the accused intercepted her, behaved indecently and threatened to defame her if she disclosed the incident to anyone.
Family members said the alleged harassment and threats left the teenager deeply distressed. On Tuesday morning, around 6 am, she reportedly locked herself inside her room and died by suicide.
After being alerted, police reached the spot and sent the body for postmortem examination. A field unit, dog squad and forensic team also inspected the scene and collected evidence.
Based on a complaint lodged by the victim's father, a case has been registered against the accused at Meja police station.
ACP (Meja) Sant Prasad Upadhyay said all aspects of the case are being thoroughly investigated. Police teams are conducting raids at possible hideouts to arrest the accused. Further action will be taken based on the postmortem report and the findings of the investigation, he added....
