Lakhimpur Kheri, Aug. 26 -- Forest officials on Tuesday captured two leopards from separate locations in Nighasan subdivision of the Dudhwa buffer zone, providing relief to villagers who had reported repeated sightings near human habitations. One leopard was lured into a cage with bait in a sugarcane field at Pradhanpurwa village in north Nighasan, while the other was captured at Hiralalpurwa in south Nighasan. Sub-divisional officer Manoj Tiwari said the leopards had been prowling near villages for nearly two weeks, killing domestic animals and stray dogs and causing fear among residents. Patrolling and monitoring were subsequently intensified, and cages were placed at locations where leopard movement was frequently reported. Tiwari urged villagers to remain alert, particularly as leopards may seek shelter in the wake of recent flooding. Several villages in Nighasan tehsil have been affected by floods caused by the Sharda, Mohana and Ghaghra rivers. Dudhwa buffer zone veterinarian Dr Daya Shankar examined both leopards at the range headquarters. He said both were males aged about seven to nine years and appeared healthy, with no major deformities. Fifteen leopards have been captured in the buffer zone this financial year, mostly in Nighasan subdivision, following seven human casualties. HTC A 5-6-year-old male leopard was safely rescued from Guleria Jagtapur village in Bahraich's Motipur Range late Monday night. The animal entered a cage placed by the Forest Department at a frequent movement point. Veterinary examination found it healthy and active.
