Kanpur, July 30 -- Two people, including the driver, were killed and around 20 others injured after a sleeper bus carrying pilgrims from Prayagraj to Madhya Pradesh rammed into a stationary truck on the Jhansi-Kanpur national highway after midnight on Wednesday, police said. The accident took place near the Parichha Power Plant in Jhansi's Badagaon area. The double-decker sleeper bus, carrying about 30 passengers returning from Prayagraj to Vidisha, crashed into a truck parked by the roadside after the driver allegedly dozed off at the wheel. The impact crushed the front portion of the bus, trapping driver Islam Beg, a resident of Ashok Nagar in Madhya Pradesh, inside the cabin. He and another passenger were declared dead after being taken to hospital. Around 20 passengers sustained injuries, with 15 of them shifted to the Jhansi medical college after doctors found their condition to be critical. Circle officer Priya Singh said the truck had broken down and was parked with safety markers in place. "Preliminary findings suggest the bus driver fell asleep, causing the vehicle to veer into the stationary truck. The matter is being investigated," she said.
