Two infants under 6kg undergo roboticliver cancer surgery at SGPGIMS
LUCKNOW, Oct. 9 -- Two seven-month-old infants weighing under 6 kg successfully underwent complex robotic liver resections for hepatoblastoma, a form of liver cancer, at Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS), authorities said on Thursday.
Both children underwent chemotherapy to reduce the tumour burden before surgery.
According to hospital authorities, the first patient, a seven-month-old boy weighing about 5 kg, underwent robotic left lateral sectionectomy on September 5 for a tumour in the left lobe of his liver. The second patient, a seven-month-old girl weighing around 6 kg, underwent robotic left hepatectomy on October 3 after neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Her tumour also involved the left lobe. Both children had an uneventful postoperative recovery and are doing well while continuing their planned adjuvant chemotherapy, doctors said.
Dr Basant Kumar, who headed the surgical team, said: "The procedures were challenging because of the infants' small abdominal working space, delicate anatomy and the small calibre of their blood vessels and bile ducts. Liver resection also requires precise control of bleeding while preserving adequate healthy liver tissue."
SGPGIMS director Prof Radha Krishna Dhiman said the two procedures were, to the best of his knowledge, among the first robotic liver resections performed in infants in India.
SGPGIMS performed a liver transplant on a patient suffering from life-threatening acute-on-chronic liver failure and discharged the patient on Thursday, institute director Dr Radha Krishna Dhiman said.
The transplant was performed on August 30 using a liver retrieved from a brain-dead donor. Dr Supriya Sharma, head of the SGPGIMS Liver Transplant team, said the procedure required rapid decision-making and close coordination among several departments....
