PRAYAGRAJ, May 12 -- Police arrested two criminals on Sunday night after an encounter during a routine vehicle-checking drive in the Dilipur police station area in Pratapgarh. Both accused sustained gunshot injuries and were admitted to the medical college for treatment. According to the police, SGOP, Dilipur police station, Balram Singh, was checking vehicles when a car with two occupants approached the spot. When the police signalled them to stop, the occupants allegedly tried to run over the police personnel and fled. The police team chased the car, which sped towards the Shaheed Smarak Gate and then into a nearby jungle. During the chase, the vehicle hit a culvert and got stuck in a ditch. The two men got out of the car and allegedly opened fire on the police team. In retaliatory firing by the police, both men were injured and overpowered. The police recovered two country-made firearms, Rs 11,600, several ATM cards of different banks, Aadhaar cards and the car used in the crime. The arrested men were identified as Mohammad Aftab, a resident of Vasupur village, and Naushad Ali of Tilauri, both under the Lilapur police station area of Pratapgarh. Around 5 pm, his bike was hit by a Bolero approaching from the wrong side on the Prayagraj-Lucknow highway near Mamarkhapur, under Manikpur police station limits. The collision left him critically injured. Police reached the spot and took the unconscious man to the nearby CHC. After initial treatment, doctors referred him to Swaroop Rani Hospital in Prayagraj due to his serious condition. However, since the injured youth was unattended and the police had returned after admitting him, the ambulance driver reportedly refused to take him to Prayagraj all alone. As a result, Anil Kumar remained at the CHC from around 5.30 pm till 9.30 pm without advanced medical care and eventually died. His relatives, who had been searching for him, reached the hospital around 10 pm and identified the body....
